Want to start growing your own vegetables at home?
A common mistake beginners make is to overgrow. It is best to start small, limiting yourself to just a few vegetables and then gradually expand your ambitions as time and experience allow.
If you are just starting out in farming, it is best to start with crops that require little maintenance, are ready for harvest in a short time and suffer from few pests and diseases. Examples of beginner crops would be: zucchini, beans, beets, beets, arugula, radishes, strawberries and potatoes.

The ideal for a vegetable garden to produce quality crops, is to dedicate a lot of care and time, but we know that today, not everyone has it, so we are going to give you the 10 main keys so that with little time and frequency you can get the most out of the garden.
- Monitor the growth of weeds that can damage the growth of our crop.
- Mulching is nothing more than an organic fertilizer that will enrich the soil, helping to improve its structure and provide nutrients for the plants, thus preventing the growth of weeds.
- Sow seeds directly in the open air. Ideal for root crops and also for peas, beans, chard and fast, leafy crops such as spinach or lettuce.
- Buy the seeds already germinated with the first sprouts that you can get in Roots Macaronesia.
- Get a tool kit for more skillful crop management. A basic kit should include: spear or fork hoe, cultivator, shovel, rake, bucket and gloves.

- A sustainable and economical option is to install rainwater harvesting tanks that can be used for irrigation.
- Prioritize watering: it is better to water with abundant water every few days than to water with little water every day, and above all, water abundantly what is recently planted or bearing fruit.
- Remove weeds weekly and do not wait until the weeds are large enough to remove by hand.
- Grow varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases.
- Grow complementary plants that grow well together, as they attract pollinators and keep pests at bay. An example might be leek-carrot, lettuce-beet or corn-potato.
