If you’re on the lookout for activities to do in the garden during the fall, then you’re in the right place. This time of year presents an ideal opportunity to get rid of dead vegetation left over from the summer, clean up borders, gutters and more. This season is all about preparing your space before winter arrives.
In this sense, here are the five activities you should do to make the most of this autumn period:
- Plant cleaning. Before you get busy planting, it’s important to do a thorough cleanup. Sweep up any plant debris and make sure you tidy up around the garden. If you need to use any supplements to disinfect some affected areas, we suggest you look for them at ROOTS GARDENwhere you will find a variety of products ideal for this purpose.
- Delimit spaces and bring in new plants. To ensure a spectacular garden for next spring, cut back faded perennials and try planting the occasional seasonal plant. Also, clean up the edges of the garden to keep it looking tidy. Then, you can spread a thick layer of compost, wood chips or bark to nourish the soil.
- And what do we do with the lawn? If you have it, then it must be controlled immediately. Remove what is not grass, but do not throw it away: use it as part of the compost. Then apply some autumn lawn food, which you already know where to get. Take advantage of this and improve drainage. You can do this with some of the tools that you can also find in our garden center in Tenerife. Autumn is also a good time to lay new grass, giving it enough time to establish itself before next summer.
- Plant evergreen shrubs or trees. Evergreens provide structure and interest during the dreary winter months. Warm soil and cooler air temperatures make fall the perfect time to fill available gaps with evergreens. Shrubs are also welcome.
- Maintain gardening equipment. Before putting your lawn mower away, it is important to properly maintain it to ensure that it will be in perfect condition when it is needed next spring. Pruning shears need sharpening. You can do it yourself. Dry everything thoroughly and oil the metal parts to prevent rust. Wooden handles can be cleaned and protected with linseed oil.
Now your fall garden is neat, tidy and ready for winter. Not only will the view from your home be much nicer, but it will have a head start when spring comes and it’s time to grow back.
