Although these tropical fruiting plants are commonly known as trees, and can be seen practically all over the Canary Islands, technically they are huge herbaceous plants, which means they do not have a woody stem.

Banana trees have fleshy, erect stems from which grow large, elongated, bright green leaves. The showy flowers typically appear in spring, giving way to the fleshy, elongated, green or yellow fruit.

No matter the size of your yard or your home, there is a banana tree to suit. While most species grow best in warm climates, there are also somewhat cold-hardy banana trees. In addition, they can be good houseplants with sufficient light, although they usually do not bear fruit indoors. Banana trees generally have a rapid growth rate and should be planted in the spring.

What care should a banana tree planted in Tenerife receive?

If you are planting outdoors, choosing the right planting site is key to ease care. Grow this plant where it will be protected from strong winds, as it is very susceptible to leaf damage. Prepare its planting site by mixing some compost into the soil. And make sure you have enough space for the height and spread of your particular species.

During the growing season (spring through fall), banana plants are water hogs. You may need to water daily, especially during warm weather, to maintain adequate soil moisture. Plants will also need regular fertilization during the growing season. Bananas form in late summer in a cluster called a hand. Once the fruit is green but swollen, the stem can be cut off and placed in a cool, dry space to finish ripening.

Additionally, when growing a banana tree in Tenerife, you should keep in mind the following:

Light. Most types of banana plants prefer to grow in full sun, which means at least six hours of direct sunlight most days. However, some varieties can burn easily and will do better in partial shade.

Soil. These plants love deep, organic, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic soil pH. Generally, they have little tolerance to salt in the soil. At this point, we invite you to read What is the impact of excess nutrients on plants?.

Water. Banana trees are tropical, that is, they originate in rainforests, so they need a lot of water and a lot of moisture in the air. They do best when planted in clumps fairly close together, as this helps retain moisture in the leaves. Water regularly to make sure the soil stays evenly moist but not soggy. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

Temperature and humidity. These plants thrive in warm, humid conditions, but do not like extremes of temperature. Even the most hardy and cold-tolerant banana species prefer constant temperatures ranging from 23 to 35 degrees Celsius. Cold temperatures and dry conditions can cause plants to die quickly. To increase humidity, mist leaves daily.

Fertilizer. Banana trees are heavy feeders. Apply a balanced fertilizer regularly during the growing season, following label instructions. Also, mix compost into the soil annually to raise the organic matter level.

Plantain plants can be grown in containers, but will generally need at least a 15-gallon pot for optimal growth. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and use a loose, organic potting mix.

Although you could plant the banana tree in a pot, in Tenerife it is not necessary because the climate is good enough to grow it in the garden. Also, banana trees in pots tend to have higher watering and feeding needs, as they will consume what is in their limited soil faster than if they were in the garden.

On the other hand, when planted in a pot, it will probably not reach its maximum size and will not bear fruit. Still, many people prefer them for their foliage. Generally, you should divide and transplant banana trees in containers every three years, separating the offshoots from the mother plant.

Since you are interested in knowing how to grow a banana tree in Tenerife, we invite you to subscribe to the newsletter specialized in healthy products about healthy products, plant care, gardening tips, home decorating ideas and much more from ROOTS.
