Gaillardia, also known as blanket flower, is a short-lived, easy-to-grow perennial with brightly colored, daisy-like flowers. There are more than two dozen species in the genus Gaillardia and most are native to some area of North America: Gaillardia pulchella, which is native from the southeastern United States to Colorado and southern Mexico, crossed with Gaillardia aristata , a prairie flower, to create Gaillardia X Grandiflora, which is the most common garden form.
Gaillardia forms a slowly spreading mound and the common name may be a reference to how they can slowly spread and “cover” an area. The flower can be reseeded and spread throughout the garden. Since the original plants are hybrids, expect some variation of self-seeding.
Blanket flowers are pretty foolproof if planted in well-drained soil in a full sun location. These short-lived perennials are usually planted from the start of the garden, but they also grow easily from seed planted directly in the garden after the last frost date (or started indoors about 4 to 6 weeks earlier).
Gaillardia X Grandiflora is fully hardy. Due to extensive hybridization, it is likely that you will be able to find a variety that suits your area and climatic conditions. Plants grow to about 60 centimeters tall with a spread of about 50 centimeters. This garden favorite produces large, showy flowers in shades or reds and yellows during the warm months of the season. In colder climates, protect your overwintering blanket flowers with a thick layer of mulch.
Gaillardias are so long that they work equally well in borders and containers. Blanket flowers combine well with other heat-loving plants that thrive in full sun. All varieties of Gaillardia make excellent cut flowers. They also attract butterflies and small birds, such as finches, which are a welcome addition to any garden.
